Have questions?
I've got Answers

Hello and welcome!

I’ve gathered a few common questions here to help you get the most out of your editing experience, but if you have any questions not listed, please contact me using the contact form below, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

A: I provide Story Consultations, Line Editing, and Copyediting services tailored to meet the needs of commercial fiction authors writing in the horror, mystery, and thriller genres. I will happily accept all lengths of stories, from flash fiction to full-length novels.

For additional information, please see the Services tab at the top of the page.

A: Story Consultations

  • Short Stories (up to 10,000 words)-$100
  • Novellas (10,001-50,000 words)-$200
  • Novels (50,001 words and up)-$400

Line Editing= $0.03- $0.04 per word

Copyediting = $0.02-$0.03 per word

A: Yes, I do require a $50 deposit to hold your position on my schedule. You’ll receive a service agreement and invoice when booking, so please watch for that email and respond quickly so no one sneaks in and steals your preferred timeslot! Once your deposit payment is complete, you’ll receive a reservation confirmation and access to the Client Portal. Then, you’re all set!

Full payment for services is due at the time of submission and must be paid before any work can begin. You’ll receive that invoice one week prior to your due date, so keep an eye out for that email as well.

A: This varies widely from project to project based on size of the manuscript and my current schedule.

Please reach out via the contact form below or the Let’s Get Started tab above, and we can talk about your project plans and goals.

A: Each service I offer requires a different skill set. Story Consultations are an editorial overview of the entire manuscript, while Line Editing and Copyediting drill down to focus on paragraph and sentence clarity or grammar and punctuation issues.

Attempting to perform multiple editing steps on a project simultaneously increases the possibility that I may accidentally miss something. To protect your story’s integrity, I separate these services rather than bundling them together.

A: The Client Portal streamlines our author-editor interactions and will be your personal access point for all our work together!

Once you’ve reserved a time slot with me for your initial Story Consultation, you’ll receive an emailed link to access the Portal. There you’ll be able to upload your writing, sign contracts, and pay invoices all from one secure location, day or night.

A: Of course! I prefer it, actually, and will be available by text, email, phone, or Zoom call, whichever is more convenient and comfortable for you.

A: No! There is absolutely no requirement or obligation to hire an editor before pursuing the traditional path. In fact, traditional publishers often provide several rounds of editing for you once your book has been purchased.

The trick is reaching those publishers in the first place, and generally, that means signing with the right agent. If you find yourself struggling to capture an agent’s attention or you’re receiving multiple rejection letters, it may be a good idea to reach out to an editor for help.

Editors can often tell you what’s tripping up your tale and help you refine your writing to elevate your story and potentially give you the advantage you need in today’s query trenches.

While hiring a professional editor can’t guarantee you’ll seal the deal, it will provide you with tools and knowledge you can use to improve your writing skills for years to come, which is always a  great investment for authors!

A: Your Story Consultation will answer that question!

Where traditional publishers organize a story’s journey from start to finish for their authors, it may feel overwhelming to be solely responsible for all editorial decisions.

With a Story Consultation, you’ll receive professional guidance you can use to avoid frustrated readers, negative reviews, and poor sales. You’ll also receive specific information on which editing step you need next and which steps you could skip and still turn those casual readers into super fans!

A: I don’t offer sample edits because all of my services begin with a more beneficial Story Consultation. This service will be far more meaningful to you as a writer because I read the entire work before providing you with actionable feedback you can use for the whole story versus a handful of minor edits performed over only a few pages.

No partial impressions here! Just a fully fleshed-out assessment you can implement immediately!

Plus, this service sets the stage for our ongoing work together and will ensure we’re a good author-editor fit long before any actual changes are made to your manuscript.

A: I have a Certificate in Copyediting from the University of California, San Diego and am a Certified Book Editor with the Professional Book Editor’s Association. I’m also a member of business, editing and writing organizations, including the Freelancers Association, the Editorial Freelancer’s Association, and Pikes Peak Writers. I avidly pursue continuing education courses and attend several writing and editing conferences annually to maintain my editorial skills and remain current with changing industry practices.

I’m also an insatiable reader (and watcher) of horrors, mysteries, and thrillers. A fascination I’ve held since I was old enough to buy my own books (and get into R-rated films), and I still can’t get enough of those stories!
